pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Values below 7 indicate acidity, while values above 7 indicate alkalinity. The pH scale is logarithmic, meaning each unit change represents a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration. pH is calculated as the negative logarithm (base 10) of the hydrogen ion concentration: pH = -log[H+].
pOH and the Water Dissociation Constant
pOH measures the hydroxide ion concentration similar to how pH measures hydrogen ion concentration. In aqueous solutions at 25°C, pH + pOH = 14, due to the water dissociation constant (Kw = 1.0 × 10^-14).
